Heavy showers and storms made their way through the Bay area on Saturday evening.

Storms started on the east coast and moved through southern Polk county after 4 p.m.

"Wind gusts from the outflow ahead of the storm reached 50 mph in Frostproof and Fort Meade," according to Bay News 9 meterologist Diane Kacmarik.

The same outflow then moved through Hillsborough and Pinellas, Kacmarik said.

Ruskin reported 41 mph winds, MacDill 47 mph, St. Pete Albert Whitted 48 mph,  Another storm produced 51 mph winds at Sarasota-Bradenton Airport area.

Nearly 5,000 residents were without power in central and southern Pinellas County. A downed power line also caused the closure of Gulf Boulevard from 161st Avenue to 164th Avenue in Redington Beach.

A viewer reported a fence down and a carport ripped off a mobile home on 46th Avenue North in St. Petersburg.  Storms headed for the Gulf after 8:30 pm.

Overnight will be partly cloudy.

The first half of the day was quiet and hot. Tampa hit 95 degrees, Sarasota-Bradenton Airport 97, Crystal River 95, Winter Haven 94 and St. Petersburg 94.

Sunday and Monday have a 40 percent chance of rain.

With the peak of the hurricane season approaching, there is some expected activity in the tropics. There's no imminent concern, but the Bay News 9 weather team is monitoring a disorganized area of shower and thunderstorm activity associated with a tropical wave in the western Caribbean.

"There's not a whole lot of prospect for development there in the short term," Kacmarik said. "There's some very disorganized convection. But conditions may become more favorable (for development) when it moves into the western Gulf of Mexico by Monday or Tuesday."
