Tropical Storm Bertha has strengthened into a hurricane as it moves northward away from the Bahamas.

The storm, now with 75 mph winds, is expected to stay away from the Florida coast as it eventually turns to the northeast in the western Atlantic.

On the forecast track, Bertha will pass about midway between the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda on Tuesday. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Bertha is moving toward the north at 18 mph. This general motion is expected to continue today, followed by a gradual turn toward the north-northeast and northeast during the next 48 hours.

Slow weakening is expected to begin by late tomorrow.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 160 miles from the center.
