The Knights of Columbus Assembly 0154 has launched a program in partnership with Polk Transit/Citrus Connection and the Polk County Veterans Council to dedicate all bus shelters in Polk County to noteworthy veterans.

It is expected that the first dedication will take place in conjunction with Veteran’s Day Ceremonies in November 2014. After that, dedications will take place about one per month until all shelters are dedicated.

Veterans honored will have a placard installed on the bus shelter in a prominent location along with a suitable ceremony to install the placard. Highlights of the veteran’s accomplishments will be included on Polk Transit’s website.

Veteran’s organizations may nominate individuals for consideration by completing an application and presenting it to the Veteran’s Council.

The Polk County Veterans Council will approve all recipients of the award and dictate the order in which they will be honored. The Knights Assembly will procure the placard and coordinate with all parties to establish a date and time for the dedication.

The nominating organization will be responsible for obtaining all biographical information on the honoree, approving the placard and for notifying the honoree’s family members.

Applications should include:

  • Name of the honoree
  • Sponsoring organization
  • Contact name, phone, e-mail
  • Brief description why the veteran should be honored.

Nominations can be forwarded to Steve Jones at sirstevetheknight@tampabay.rr.com or call at (863) 688-8787.

While variations in the placard are allowed, all will be the same size. There should be enough information to make the bus rider stand up and take notice and perhaps seek more information.
