A student at King High School was arrested after he was found in possession of a loaded gun.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the school resource deputy received a tip from a student on Crime Stoppers that the 17 year old suspect had a gun.

The deputy and school security responded to the suspect’s classroom where they searched his book bag. Located within a pocket of the bag was a loaded .32 caliber pistol, deputies said.

The student was taken into custody and will be booked at the Juvenile Assessment Center.

As scary as it was, students are just glad the gun never went off.

“I’m thankful nobody got injured,” said Diquan Gilchrist, a senior. "It could have been any of us that got shot, somebody could have died. We’re grateful administrators handled it.”

We are not naming the student because he is a minor, in accordance with our crime guidelines. But we did stop by his house to talk to his parents. His father answered the door—and had no idea his son had been arrested.

A recorded phone message went out to parents at King High today letting them know what happened and how it was handled.
