Deputies on Tuesday arrested a St. Petersburg man they say beat a woman unconscious, threw her in the trunk of their car, drove off and crashed when she tried to call for help.

Around 5:30 a.m. 29-year-old Ray Walker and Angela Tibbetts, 34, of Seminole got into an argument while traveling in a 1997 Honda in the Brandon area, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Tibbetts pulled the car to the side of the road and got out. Walker followed her and hit her in the face and head with his fists and elbows, according to the arrest report.

When Tibbetts lost consciousness, Walker put her in the car's trunk. He then got behind the wheel and drove to the intersection of Windhorst Road and Lakewood Drive.

While en route, though, Tibbetts regained consciousness and managed to climb through the trunk into the back seat. When she stood up through the sunroof and called for help, Walker drove into the path of another vehicle crashed, deputies said.

Tibbetts was taken to a hospital with facial fractures, a broken jaw, contusions and a laceration to her head and required surgery. Walker was taken to a hospital before being charged with aggravated battery and kidnapping.
