Florida Polytechnic University may be brand new but school officials are already talking expansion.

School leaders want to build a second dorm. The school opened its doors in August with 550 students.

Officials at the Lakeland-based school are going ahead with plans to get approval on the building from the State Board of Governors. However, it may be months before that happens as the expansion proposal still has to be place on the board's meeting agenda.

Meanwhile, school officials say the cutting-edge campus and facility will be compared to MIT and Stanford - eventually.

The students that started classes this fall are getting $5,000 scholarships for each of their first three years, which is supposed to cover most of their tuition and fees. That's because the school is not accredited yet, and may not be until 2016, and students are not eligible for federal financial aid.

The school is the state's 12th university.
