A deal that would have given local developer Bill Edwards control of Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg is dead.

Mayor Rick Kriseman's office and Commission Wengay Newton confirmed the deal fell through on Wednesday.

"Despite being informed by both disputing parties that an agreement was reached in principle, we have been notified that no such agreement has been reached," Kriseman said. "The St. Petersburg Baseball Commission will continue to manage Al Lang Field under the terms of their current contract."

The deal was supposed to be finalized by 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Edwards had pledged more than $1 million to take over the stadium on one condition - no more baseball at the venue. The stadium is the home of the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the North American Soccer League.

No minor league baseball team has called the stadium home since 2000 and the Tampa Bay Rays last held spring training at the facility in 2009.

Edwards released the following statement regarding the deal:

"My objective has been to provide the city with a great opportunity for soccer to grow and thrive here," Edwards said in a release. "I am disappointed with this turn of events. We thought we were close to a deal, but apparently not."
