One person was killed Sunday after gunshots were fired during a Haines City gathering.

According to Haines City police, several people had gathered in the area of Martin Luther King Way and Avenue East for a "Chunky Sunday" party when the afternoon was interrupted by gunfire.

When officers responded, no victims or witnesses were located.

A short time later, police received a call from the Heart of Florida Hospital about two people arriving with gunshot wounds.

Police said a 22-year-old Davenport man came to the hospital with a wound to his right calf. He was treated and released.

A 21-year-old man, Shykeem Pitts of Haines City, arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his back right shoulder blade. He later died as a result of his injuries.

Investigators also received a call from Lake Wales Hospital about another possible gunshot victim.

Officials said a 23-year-old Haines City man, Joseph Turpin, was shot in the ankle. Police said he was in the same area as the other two shooting victims when the gunfire happened.

After a further investigation, Turpin was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police have not released details of the shooting. The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information to contact the Haines City Police Department at 863-421-3636 ext. 2235.
