A Hernando County commissioner is hoping to help make the beach more boater friendly.

On a busy day the Hernando Beach boat ramp can get swamped and finding a parking spot for your truck and trailer is not easy. Commissioner Diane Rowden is looking into expanding parking at the county's main boat ramps.

"If you don't get here early enough you won't find a spot," said Danielle Underwood who boats a few times a week.

Underwood and her family launch their boat at Hernando Beach all the time. She says parking can be a nightmare, especially during the weekend.

"People standing in spots, holding spots for the next boat to come in -- it gets pretty crazy," Underwood said.

County leaders are working on an idea to ease the parking problem. By expanding the parking at Bayport, it will take some of the load of Hernando Beach. Parking is also an issue at Bayport so more spaces would be beneficial.

It all sounds great to boater Kimberly Marinas.

"Sometimes I've left because I couldn't get any parking," Marinas said.

County leaders are hoping to work out a deal with the Southwest Florida Water Management District which owns land next to Bayport. Rowden said a land swap would be ideal to save some money.

"If they could expand Bayport, that would be amazing," Underwood said.
