The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is returning $800,000 from its 2014 fiscal year budget to the county.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis cites "continued efforts to streamline and cut costs," combined with a quiet hurricane season so far, for the savings.

There's more.

The sheriff's office said revenues collected from sources such as fees paid by inmates for booking, food and medical costs, investigative costs recovered from criminals, civil fees, contracts with the School Board to help fund school resource officers and school crossing guards and contracts with agencies for dispatching their units have resulted in the anticipated return of another $415,000 to the county.

These revenues exceed budgeted projections by about $100,000, the agency said.

"We at the sheriff's Office are committed to being a team player with the county and the citizens we serve," Nienhuis said in a statement. "This includes the ongoing effort to maintain the high level of service our citizens expect, while, at the same time, doing business in the most cost-effective manner possible."
