Dozens of children and their families visit the Riverwalk Playground along the Manatee River in Bradenton on any given day.

However, there are some that can’t because of their disabilities.

A group of Manatee High School students are working to change that.

In an effort to make sure all children can play in the playground area, a member of the school’s Key Club group are planning on building a handicapped accessible playground there.

The community service group wants to add a “Equal Play Playground" next to the existing playground.

The group has already received approval from Bradenton City Council members to move forward.

The students are planning on building a ship-themed playground that will be accessible to children in wheelchairs.

In order to buy the new playground equipment, the students need to raise $35,000.

They’re hoping to accomplish this through grants and donations.

Junior Kendall Mackey said the project is very special to them.

“It’s really nice, especially for Key Club,” Mackey said.  “For a lot of our events, we go and we help.  But the lasting impact is just in the minds of the people we help. This is something that will really last physically in the community for a long time to come.”

The students are optimistic they’ll reach their goal soon.

They hope to install the new playground this spring.
