Two Ybor City roads are set to undergo major enhancements.

Work has started on 21st Street and 22nd Street in Ybor City between Adamo Drive and I-4 to make a major change in how both roads are used.

Currently, the City of Tampa is working to install new sewer lines under the streets. Once that project is complete, the state will do its part by narrowing the roads from three lanes to two, adding bike lanes, bricking the crosswalks, and adding benches, decorative lighting and trees.

At a cost of $8.3 million, the Ybor City streets are being transformed as part of the larger I-4/Selmon Connector project.

Truck traffic between the interstate and Port of Tampa uses 21st and 22nd Street as the main route the port.  Now that the Connector is open, some of that traffic has diverted.

Florida Department of Transportation Spokesperson Kris Carson says there are more changes on the way.

"When this project is complete, we're going to turn these roads over to the City of Tampa, and at that point they will sign them for 'No Trucks,' " Carson said.

From the state's perspective, 21st and 22nd streets are marked as State Road 585. State Roads are also designated as truck routes in Florida.

Once the city is responsible for the roads, the only trucks allowed in Ybor City will be those making local deliveries.

The project completion date is fall 2016.  For more information on Ybor City projects, visit the Ybor City Development Corporation's website.
