Officials at the Florida Department of Transportation are shopping around for plans to add express toll lanes to interstates in the Bay area.

The lanes would allow commuters to pay a fee to use special lanes during times when traffic is heavy.

"The whole idea behind express toll lanes is reliability and choices," said FDOT Spokesperson Kris Carson. "You don't have to get in the toll lane if you don't want to, but if you're running late for the airport, or an interview, or to pick up your child at daycare, you can hop in the SunPass lanes, the tolled express lanes and you can get where you're going faster."

But not all residents at Thursday's meeting were excited about the plans.

"Why am I paying for a road for the elite people to use?," said one resident.

Other's like Maria Rodriguez are excited about the prospect.

"I'll pay $2 if it has to be $2," Rodriguez said. "I mean I could pay $5 if it's gonna get me there quicker. Because commuting is time that you are away from your family."

Similar express lanes are already in use in Miami. FDOT is still looking for funding for the master plan project. Estimates put it at more than $6 billion.
