Three people - an estranged couple from Citrus County and a bystander - are dead after a shooting Thursday night at a home in Inglis, which is just north of Citrus County.

According to Levy County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Scott Tummond, Walter Tyson, 57, Patricia Tyson, whose age was unknown, and Walter S. Terhune, 68, of Inglis were all pronounced dead at the scene, which was a home directly across from Inglis Town Hall.

A fourth man, identified as Otis Bean, is in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

Just after 6 p.m. Thursday, the sheriff's office began receiving 911 calls reporting shots fired, Tummond said. An EMS crew and law enforcement were dispatched.

Tummond said the EMS crew arrived first and found two men shot in the front yard of the home.

Investigators said Walter Terhune, who was a Vietnam veteran, was at a bank across the street when he heard the gunfire. He was shot when he went to warn about children nearby.

One man, identified as Terhune, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second, identified as Bean, who owned the home, was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.

Law enforcement officials surrounded the home, believing the shooter was inside, Tummond said. Officials saw a man appear in a second-floor window, then disappear from sight, Tummond said. They heard a single gunshot.

Authorities entered the home and found Patricia Tyson dead on the ground floor, Tummond said. They found the gunman, identified as her estranged husband, Walter Tyson, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Tummond said two guns were recovered from the scene.

Otis Bean, who owned the home where the shooting took place, remains in critical condition.

Police believe the Tysons had recently separated. The Tysons' daughter, Jennifer Conklin, said the couple had been married for 35 years when they separated, and that Patricia Tyson had left her husband for Bean.

Conklin said she was on the phone with her father as the shootings happened.

"My father called me after he did it," she said. "He called me and told me what he did, and I begged him not to take his own life. And he told me he was sorry and that he loved me."

Conklin said the stress from the end of his marriage caused her father to snap.

"My father was a really amazing guy who just lost it this past week when his wife left him and he didn’t know how to handle it," she said.

Terhune, who was fatally shot in the yard, was at a bank drive-thru across the street when he heard gunfire. Tummond said Terhune, a Vietnam veteran, noticed that children were nearby and went to intervene.

"This is a very ... tragic incident for this small community," Tummond said.
