A preservation project is wrapping up in Kings Bay.

Crews are planting eelgrass in seven-foot plots as one of the final steps in a year-long restoration project. The grass absorbs nutrients, helps clean the water, and it's food for the manatees.

"What we're trying to do is get complete coverage of the bottom," said Carter Henne, who is with Sea and Shoreline. "We're not exactly sure how tall it's going to grow. It's going to grow about 36 inches once it's fully mature but manatees and ducks and turtles are going to eat it."

Officials expect the restoration project to continue for another year. They're going to maintain cages over the grass for now so it has a chance to grow roots.
