The walk to school for some Campbell Park Elementary School students takes them right along the very busy Martin Luther King Jr. Street in St. Petersburg.

Safety is a big concern for many parents.

"It’s unsafe for them to be walking down these roads by themselves," said Deneen Sweat.

Safety is why Sweat volunteers with the Walking School Bus program. It means an adult volunteer walks with the children every step of the way, so they don’t have to walk alone.

Damon Evans’ three children walk with Sweat. He says it’s a relief knowing they are supervised and safe.

“That’s my first and main concern is to get the kids to school safely," said Sweat.

The Walking School Bus is currently available in only a few neighborhoods.

The program is coordinated by United Way Suncoast in conjunction with corporate sponsors.

It’s based on a neighborhood’s needs.
