Visitors are disappointed to see that a popular outdoor spot in Citrus County is still closed for maintenance, even though it's unclear when work will begin.

County officials say they are playing it safe by keeping the pier at Fort Island Trail Park closed until the pilings are replaced.

Ed Fotusky is from out of town and wanted to do some fishing but won't argue with safety concerns.

"If it is a safety issue, absolutely not, and of course, I don't know," he said. "I haven't assessed the situation, and I'm not qualified to do so. If it's true, it's true."

County leaders haven't decided who is going to do the maintenance work yet. The project goes before county commissioners later this month.

As of now it's unclear how many pilings will need to be changed.
