A Lakeland woman died Monday morning after she was involved in a three-vehicle crash.
The crash happened 6:30 a.m. on Combee Road North near the intersection with Old Combee Road in Lakeland.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Kalie Cadwell, 23, of Lakeland was driving a 1996 green Honda Accord south on Combee Road when a 2008 black Chevrolet Malibu driven by Jennifer Nestor, 45, of Lakeland, turned off Old Combee Road and traveled into Cadwell's path.
The Accord hit the Malibu, then went into the northbound lane of Combee Road North and into the path of a 2015 white Peterbilt tractor trailer driven by Gary Higginbotham, 46, of Mascotte, investigators said. The tractor trailer hit the Accord and both vehicles came to rest in a ditch.
Cadwell had to be extricated from the Accord. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said she was not wearing her seatbelt and her airbags deployed.
Higginbotham was treated and released at the scene. He was wearing his seatbelt, officials said.
Nestor was not injured in the crash. Officials said she was also wearing her seatbelt.
Officials said fog was dense in the area and that limited visibility may have contributed to the crash. Neither speed nor impairment are believed to be factors.
The road was closed in both directions for about five hours.
The investigation continues.
