Citrus County sheriff's deputies shot and wounded a wanted man they say came at a deputy and a K-9 unit with his vehicle Wednesday.

Late in the morning, deputies responded to a home on the 3000 block of N Cannes Point in Hernando to serve a Marion County warrant on 43-year-old Steven Degennaro.

"Upon arrival, the deputies took up positions around the house and tried to engage the suspect," Sheriff Jeff Dawsy said. "The suspect was able to leave the residence, get into his vehicle and, even with our commands, still start the vehicle up, put the vehicle in drive and hit one of our deputies and one of our K-9 officers."

Deputies then shot inside the vehicle and wounded Degennaro. The injured man was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital, the sheriff's office said.

The deputy and K-9 unit who were struck were not injured, Dawsy said.

Dawsy said the sheriff's office has been looking for him since the weekend.

"Marion County had a home invasion-type burglary where there was some violence involved in it," he said.

Right now, it is unclear how many times Degennaro was shot, officials say.

As is customary with an officer-involved shooting, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.
