The man who caused a deadly car wreck in 2011, then fled to South America has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Diego Cavalieri, 26, pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and reckless driving with serious bodily injury.

Prosecutors say Cavalieri was speeding when he crashed his car in Largo on Christmas Day, killing his passengers, 25-year-old Thomas WIlliams and 22-year-old Sean Wilson.

Largo police say he was going 70 mph in a 35 mph speed zone, but defense experts say Cavalieri was going closer to 50 mph.

In court on Friday, the mothers of those victims told the judge to sentence Cavalieri to life in prison.

"You took life, you owe life," said Wilson's mother, Lori Mercer. "We the family want justice."

"Give the defendant life in prison," said Williams' mother, Maria Fischer.

The other passenger in Cavalieri's car, Tim Talbot, was so upset he walked out of court while talking to the judge.

Cavalieri's parents were not in court because the family went to Uruguay after the accident, and they won't be allowed back into the country. The U.S. Marshals Service had to bring Cavalieri back to Pinellas County after charges were filed.

Cavalieri's wife, Cathy, asked the judge to have mercy on her husband.

"He doesn't deserve to have life in prison because he just doesn't," she said. "He's just a good kid."

Cavalieri took the stand during the sentencing hearing and apologized for the crash.

"I'm truly sorry and I pray that one day God gives you the capacity to forgive me for what I have done even though I can't forgive myself," he said.

The minimum sentencing guidelines called for 23 years in prison.

"This is not the kind of thing that any judge looks forward to doing," said Judge Thane Covert.

Judge Covert then sentenced Cavalieri to 30 years.

The victims' families say they are very disappointed with the sentence. They had hoped if he didn't get life in prison, at minimum he would have received a sentence of 40 years.
