Some Hernando County schools are turning to private fundraisers to raise money for improvements.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that Springstead High School in Spring Hill is trying to raise $320,000 to replace its cracked a pitted polyurethane gym floor.

And a group founded to fund projects at Challenger K-8 School of Science and Mathematics has branched out to raise money for improvements districtwide.

Some school board members told the Times that projects donate are willing to pay for - such as expenditures for athletics or the band - are not always the ones the schools need the most.
