A small plane crashed into the backyard of an Inverness home Monday afternoon, deputies said.

The plane crashed at a house at 743 Carnegie Drive shortly before 4 p.m. Deputies said no one was seriously injured in the crash, although pilot Joe Rondel Smith was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

“We were playing pool in our little man cave there and we heard a boom and we thought it was a tree limb or lightning, thunder something like that,” said Jennifer Hoar. “And we came running out here because our dog was out here, and we found this.”

According to Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen, the Beechcraft BE 36 aircraft took off from Marco Island and was heading to Ocala International when 67-year-old Smith attempted to divert the plane to Inverness Airport.

“He wasn't really saying anything when I found him,” Hoar said. “But I asked him his name. He didn't answer me, but he was moving I pulled the earplugs out of his ears and I asked him what his names was and he said, "Joe" and he didn't remember anything else.”

Bergen said the aircraft clipped the roof of the house on Carnegie Drive as Smith tried to divert it.

When deputies arrived at the house, they found the plane in the backyard.

They said the plane had also clipped a power line, then struck the back porch of the home before landing.

Deputies said the homeowners were inside at the time of the crash, but they were not injured.

“We were very lucky because he skimmed the top of the room that we were in. Thank God for that,” Hoar said.

Crews responded to the scene to restore power to the home and to fix the power lines.
