A two-alarm fire destroyed a mattress business in Tampa on Saturday afternoon.

According to Tampa Fire Rescue, firefighters responded to the Quisqueya mattress store, located at 3106 E. Seventh Ave., shortly after 12:30 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy flames and smoke coming from the rear of the single-story building, so the incident commander called a second alarm.

Firefighters then tried to get into the building, but the smoke and flames were so heavy that the decision was made to go into defensive mode and fight the fire from the outside.

Two people were inside the building when the fire broke out, and they both escaped without injury. The manager of the business noticed that a mattress was on fire, which is when he called 911.

The business is considered a complete loss. The cost of the damage is estimated at $200,000.

Investigators said the fire started as a result of static electricity discharge.

"An imbalance of electrical charges within or on the surface of the foam material used to make mattresses caused it to ignite, which resulted in major fire and smoke damage throughout the structure," the agency said in a statement.

Smoke from the fire was visible from miles away, including in Ybor City, where the Tampa Pride Parade was just about to begin when the fire broke out.
