A bicyclist was critically injured and the driver of the van that struck him was arrested Monday night in Riverview, authorities said.

Jason Saxe, 23, of Tampa and Willis VanCleve, 24, of Riverview were riding bikes west on Rhodine Road around 8:20 p.m. when Saxe was hit from behind by a 2002 Dodge van. Saxe, who was thrown from the bike, was transported to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition, deputies said.

VanCleve was struck after the initial impact and suffered minor injuries.

Deputies arrested the driver of the van, Freddie Ray Sloop of Riverview, who they say had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath. Sloop gave blood alcohol content samples of .127 and .129 percent via a breathalyzer test and was arrested for driving under the influence, deputies said.
