There's new talent on Lakeland airwaves and they're emanating from Southeastern University.

The private Christian school has  boosted the signal of its FM radio station. WESU 93.7, which was previously only heard on campus, has a signal that can be heard throughout most of Lakeland.

Students are running the broadcasts, under the watchful eye of communication professor David Lee, a 30-year veteran of Christian television and radio stations. Lee said the move to expand the station will allow the college's radio broadcast students become better professionals.

"Let [the students] feel the weight of what it really means to talk into the mic," Lee said, describing what the programs wants from its students. "To really think about what they are saying. To think about what they are doing."

Students are taking that message to heart.

"You can only do and say so much in a classroom," said senior broadcast student Lauren Mathis. "But you really want to learn from someone who has that real life experience."

Lee said it took four years to receive a FCC license, as well as determining where the station radio tower would sit.

Now up and running, the station plans to play Christian music, as well as feature school and area musician and cover the university's sports teams and news.
