North Pinellas County residents can safely dispose of unwanted electronics and chemicals with a free collection event Saturday in Tarpon Springs.

The collection takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., weather permitting, on Saturday, at Tarpon Springs High School on 1411 Gulf Road.

At this and other collections offered by Pinellas County Solid Waste, residents can drop off cellphones, tablets, computers (laptop and desktop), monitors and televisions.

Chemical items accepted include automotive fluids, rechargeable batteries, fuel, paint and fluorescent bulbs, along with other mercury containing devices. Participants must be in a vehicle.

Residents should not mix chemicals together or place them in dark plastic bags and should keep products in original, labeled containers if possible. Individual rechargeable batteries should be placed in separate plastic bags or have terminals covered with heavy tape to prevent short-circuits.

Items that will not be accepted include air conditioning units and other large appliances, CD/DVD players, radioactive, biological or infectious waste, fire extinguishers, tires and propane tanks.

For more information on mobile collections including a full list of accepted items, instructions on how to transport chemicals and future dates, visit www.pinellascounty.org/solidwaste/mobile.htm.

Businesses can participate in the mobile collection events for a fee. Businesses can arrange for drop-off and payment by calling EQ Florida at 813-319-3400 for chemicals and electronics.

Household mobile collections are offered by Pinellas County Solid Waste throughout the year at a variety of locations. Mobile collections are subject to change or cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances such as severe weather.
