A pair of Everyday Heroes are making socks their business. For Courtney Nathe and Sally Campbell, SOCKS is a way to give back.

About four years ago, 18-year-old Courtney created the nonprofit group, which stands for Students Organizing Cancer patients Krazy Socks. The group provides therapeutic, moisturizing and just fun socks to children and adult cancer patients.

When 12-year-old Sally heard about the group, she was inspired to help out, too.

“When she contacted me, I wasn’t really sure what we were getting into,” Courtney said. “She said she was a seventh-grader and I was like, ‘Okay, I’m definitely interested in volunteers.’ We met for lunch one day, and when I met her I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, my life changed.’ She’s been an amazing supporter,” Courtney said.

Now SOCKS has a sub-organization, spearheaded by Sally. It’s called “Sallybrating with Socks.” Sally does fundraising on her own both in person and through social media.

“These socks, they’re boys and girls, but they come from friends, teachers, even people that I’ve never known in my whole life, and so it’s just a great honor to receive them,” Sally said.

The girls’ hard work has resulted in socks being donated to hospitals in all 50 states. And when Courtney leaves next year to start college at the University of Florida, she’s turning day-to-day reins to Sally.
