Authorities say an Orlando restaurant employee is missing four fingers after a meat grinder caught his left hand.

Police say 19-year-old Joshua Simpkins was grinding pork at a Golden Corral Thursday morning when a co-worker heard screaming. The co-worker saw Simpkins' bleeding hand and told someone to call 911.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that restaurant staff had cleaned the area and thrown the remains of the fingers and ground pork away by the time police officers and firefighters arrived.

An officer reported that the fingers on Simpkins's left hand, with the exception of the thumb, had been ground off. He was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

A restaurant spokeswoman said in a statement that an OSHA investigation found that safety procedures and training were in order, and the equipment was working properly.
