A bill to require a 24-hour waiting period for abortions is headed to Republican Gov. Rick Scott's desk.

State Sen. Anitere Flores said that if only one woman decides not to get an abortion after a waiting period, she'll consider the bill a success.

The Senate voted 26-13 for the measure Friday after about an hour of debate.

But Democrats argue that abortion would become the only medical procedure with a state-mandated waiting period.

Democrats also say the bill reflects a double standard for Republicans who claim they want government out of people's lives.

"Let us not say we’re against government intrusion and vote for a measure that does exactly what you say you don’t want," said State Sen. Geraldine Thompson.

The bill provides exceptions for victims of rape, incest, human trafficking or domestic abuse.

Scott's office didn't immediately respond to an email about the bill.

Scott is against abortion and has signed measures such as one requiring ultrasounds before the procedure.
