This weekend, thousands of USF students are graduating the green way.

For the first time, USF graduates will wear environmentally friendly gowns.

It's called a sustainable commencement. Each robe is made from 23 plastic bottles that were thrown into landfills.

Graduates said it's a step in the right direction.

"Here at USF, we want to ensure that we're protecting the environment and ensure we have a future for the next generation," said Jean Cocco, president of the USF System Student Advisory Council.

The idea came from a couple of USF students who were looking for a green way to walk across the stage.

The new robes are more expensive than the traditional polyester gowns.

Some students said they wish there was an option.

"Students should have a choice on what they want to buy, either the previous gown or the one that's environmentally friendly because I think some students don't have the money for it," said graduate Lacy Nauck.

The total gowns worn by USF graduates this weekend means 200,000 plastic bottles have been reused.
