A driver escaped injury after her vehicle caught fire on I-275 Thursday afternoon.

The 78-year-old driver from Texas was heading south on I-275 near Roosevelt Boulevard in a 2015 Hyundai Elantra when she heard a noise emanate from her vehicle, according to FHP.

The driver stopped when other drivers warned the woman that the vehicle was on fire, St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue said.

The driver pulled over to the shoulder and immediately observed flames coming from the undercarriage, troopers said. She was able to safely exit the vehicle.

St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue responded and shut down the interstate while they extinguished the fire.

Florida Highway Patrol was on scene to assist with traffic; which was backed up all the way to the Howard Frankland Bridge.
