Polk County deputies are looking for a suspect who they say stole a car with an infant and an autistic man inside.

Sloan Maybeck, 44, is wanted in connection with the carjacking, which happened Friday at 5:30 p.m. off State Road 60 in Bartow.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, a woman pulled into the parking lot outside a bait store on State Road 60 with her 30-year-old autistic son and 14-month-old baby. It was a hot afternoon, so she left the car running, deputies said.

While she was inside grabbing items, she noticed a suspicious person walking from car to car, carrying a suitcase. She became concerned so she started going outside and by the time she got to her car, the person was inside with her kids.

Deputies said she grabbed the door to pull it open, and the man reversed the car, dragging her and a witness who tried to help. The man, later identified as Maybeck, drove off, fleeing west on State Road 60.

The woman was able to run a short distance home to call 911.

Deputies were working to identify the suspect and the location of the car when they learned the man and baby were found in Bartow. They said Maybeck had stopped the stolen car in the area of Floral Avenue and ordered the pair out of the car. He then continued on.

The vehicle was later recovered in Bradenton.

Maybeck is described as a white man who is 5'9" and weighs 190 pounds. A warrant has been issued for his arrest on two counts of attempted murder, kidnapping and carjacking.

Officials say Maybeck may be traveling in another stolen vehicle, described as a 2004 brown Nissan Maxima with Florida tag CEBX36.

Maybeck was recently released from a Polk County detox center, and told people in the area that he needed a ride to Sebring.
