The driver of a minivan that ended up in the water near the bridge at Snell Isle Blvd NE and Coffee Pot Blvd NE has been charged with DUI.

The accident happened at 3:53 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The driver David Mark Ellis, 59, suffered minor injuries in the accident, but refused medical treatment.

Aside from driver impairment, police said there does not seem to any other contributing reason for his car leaving the roadway and driving into the water.

Ellis' BAC levels were determined to be .264 and .273 after testing. He has two prior DUI convictions which date back to the 1980s.

He has been transported to the Pinellas County Jail.
