The Pasco County Board of County Commissioners has unanimously approved the formation of a Food Policy Advisory Council.

Pasco becomes the first county in the region with a food policy council. The only others in the state are in Duval, Miami-Dade and Orange counties.

The council's mission is to help facilitate access to "culturally appropriate, nutritionally sound and affordable food produced in Pasco County," according to a news release. County Commissioners will appoint the initial members of the council, which will include representatives from agriculture, health and human services, education, market management and other entities.

The first task of the council will be to conduct a food assessment.  This will be followed by an analysis of the findings of the assessment. Following that will be proposals for specific actions.
