A Venice man is facing felony charges after his 3-year-old son shot his 1-year-old daughter.

Reynold Franzen, 35, was arrested Wednesday on charges of culpable negligence in connection with the May 15 shooting.

According to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, Rachel Franzen picked up the couple's children from daycare. She buckled her daughter in, and told her son to get into his seat. Another parent walked up, and she stood about ten feet away from the car while she talked to him.

Then deputies said they heard a loud bang, which they initially thought was a transformer, but as Franzen walked toward her vehicle, she heard her daughter crying and saw blood on her face. Deputies said she then found her son holding a gun.

The girl was treated at All Children's Hospital and released on May 19.

Deputies said Reynold Franzen told them he left his handgun in the glove compartment of the family car five days before the shooting, when he went into a store to buy alcohol. Franzen said he forgot about the weapon and never got it from the car.

Franzen turned himself into detectives and was booked into the Sarasota County Jail. He was released after posting $1,500 bond.
