Deputies shot and wounded a gun-wielding man during a domestic violence situation in Spring Hill on Saturday night, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office said.

Around 7 p.m., deputies responded to a home on Braemere Drive after a caller said a woman had been severely injured by a man.

While emergency personnel were attending to the woman, a gunshot rang out from inside the home. Deputies say they then learned the man was still inside the home.

Around 7:40 a.m., the man came out of the home armed with a "long gun," and a deputy shot him, the sheriff's office said. The wounded man, whose identity has not been released, was flown to a hospital with unspecified injuries.

"The initial reports I'm hearing from witnesses is that he was instructed several times to drop the weapon," Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis said.

No other information has been released. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating, as is standard procedure in a deputy- or officer-involved shooting.
