A 24-year-old man has been accused of setting fire to a Brooksville church shortly before a wedding was scheduled to take place.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of David Willmott Jr., who deputies say is a trustee of the church. They said Willmott also has a history of calling in bomb threats to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, firefighters and deputies responded to the Lake Lindsey Methodist Church on Lake Lindsey Road at 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

When they arrived, they found that several fires had been set within two buildings at the church. They said they also discovered that the wedding was scheduled for later in the afternoon, and that the church's gathering hall had been pre-set with table settings and wedding decorations.

Investigators said specific areas had been set on fire, possibly indicating anger targeted at the bride's side of the wedding.

Officials said investigators quickly developed Willmott as a person of interest in the fire. Willmott was the first to arrive on the scene when the fire was reported, the report said.

Several leads, including Willmott's proximity to the fire and his past behavior, led investigators to identify him as the suspect.

On Tuesday, detectives interviewed Willmott, and they said he admitted to starting the fires at the church. Willmott reportedly provided specific details regarding the crime scene, which detectives said verified the credibility of his confession.

Detectives said they were unable to determine a clear motive.
