A man involved in a 12-hour standoff at his Clearwater home on Wednesday was shot multiple times and taken to a local hospital.

The situation happened at a house in the 1500 block of Carroll Street shortly before 6:30 a.m., when 43-year-old Frederick Nelson's family members called police.

According to Clearwater police, the situation started when Nelson threatened a family member. The family member got out of the house safely, and investigators tried to negotiate with him until 6:30 p.m.

On two occasions, after barricading himself in his room under cinder blocks, doors and other debris, Nelson either pointed his weapon at or fired at a Clearwater police officer. Two police officers fired back on those two different occasions.

Those two officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is routine in such matters while a review is conducted.

The man was shot mutiple times and was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.

About a half-dozen houses near the home were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Police said a variety of means was attempted throughout the day to get Nelson, who was armed with a handgun in his bedroom, out of the house. Those methods included verbal dialogue with negotiators through multiple tools, use of robots, pole cameras and a variety of chemical munitions.

During the 12-hour standoff, multiple police officers were treated by paramedics for heat-related issues.

Nelson has had previous contact with police for mental-health-related issues.
