Students could soon have a say on who will represent them on the Hillsborough County School Board.

The school board is set to discuss the proposal by board member Cindy Stuart during its Tuesday meeting.

Under the proposal, the student representatives wouldn't have voting rights. However, they would be allowed to participate in conversations that involve student issues.

Stuart says student representation on the board would not only give students a voice in the workings of the district, but also give board members a reality check when it comes to how the district's decisions affect students.

“Sometimes they have really great ideas that me as a parent don’t think about, or as a teacher I may not think about or as an administrator I might not think about or come up with," she said. "I mean, they come up with some really great things.”

Putting students on the school board wouldn't cost the district any money, so if school board members decide to move forward with the proposal, it wouldn't take long for them to develop a plan.

If the school district does approve the plan, student representatives could be at board meetings starting this fall.

The school district reached out to other school districts in Florida with student representation on their boards. They've received input from Leon, Miami-Dade, Martin and Lee counties.
