Five people were killed in a crash in Hernando County Monday morning.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Citrus Way and Ponce De Leon Boulevard in Brooksville.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a box truck traveling southbound on Citrus Way failed to stop at the intersection of SR-700, which is controlled by stop signs and flashing red stop lights, and collided with a 2006 Chevrolet pickup towing a utility trailer traveling westbound on SR-700.

As a result of the impact, the Chevy pickup caught fire. Five people in the pickup died.

Two people in the box truck were seriously injured. Both were airlifted to area hospitals. They were identified as Randy Escobar-Barrera, 22, of Tampa, and Ariel Baez, 41, of Tampa. Troopers say Escobar-Barrera was driving the box truck and Baez was the passenger.

"We're using the 'violation of right of way' because until we get it laid out for sure and further in the investigation find out did he stop and then go or did he just blow through it? I think you're going to lean more towards him going through it,” said Lt. Jerry Maddux, Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say it appears the victims in the pickup truck worked for a company in Polk County. They were from Winter Haven. Troopers say identifying the victims may take some time due to the fire damage.
