The roof of a house in Clearwater was damaged on Friday afternoon after officials said a bolt of lightning struck the house.

The call came in around 2 p.m. at 1500 Farrier Trail, which is just east of Old Coachman Road.

"Crazy Fourth of July, and it's the kind of fireworks we didn't want to see today," said homeowner Tom Goeglein.

The Goegleins were sitting out by the pool when they heard a loud noise that sounded like an explosion.

"It was a huge clap of thunder and then immediately we could tell through a flash inside of the house that something had happened, and we suspected immediately that lightning had hit the house."

Goeglein said it apparently traveled through the chimney, causing heavy smoke. Firefighters had to make holes in the wall to reach the attic and put it out.

"They knocked down some holes in the wall, in the ceiling in order to test whether there was fire behind the walls, and there was some charring and some hot spots," Goeglein said. "So they did a number of test holes and sprayed some water in."

The couple said they are just glad it didn't spread and no one was hurt.
