One of Lakeland’s biggest events was washed out this weekend and city officials said they have a plan to celebrate the Fourth of July on July 10.

The city’s annual Red, White and Kaboom event started out with a live band, contests and of course fireworks were planned before the event had to be cancelled.

“Torrential down pour with lightening strikes pretty close so we cancelled the event. The good news is we’re going to do the same thing all over again on Friday July 10th,”  said Kevin Cook, the City of Lakeland Public information officer.

Coleen Shaver and her husband, Lowell traveled all the way down from Syracuse New York to celebrate the holiday and hopefully enjoy some fire works, but that didn’t happen.

“The rain was real bad I thought it might let up, but we were all hoping it would let up, but that didn’t happen,” Lowell said

Said Coleen, “It was torrential.”

Their daughter in law, Leena Shaver said the rained out event doesn’t really come as a surprise.

“Quite honestly fourth of July seems like it gets rained out frequently down here,” she said.

So the 4th of July celebration will go on the tenth of July. We’re talking fireworks, a live band, watermelon eating contests, the whole nine. And it's all free. Better late than never right?

But will the weather still be a problem? We asked Bay News 9 meteorologist, Brian McClure.

“With it being moved to next Friday that’s both good and bad,” McClure said. “Now we have another opportunity to get the fireworks and the celebration in. The problem is the forecast challenge this time of year is that the patterns don’t change a lot. So you might end up with the exact same pattern next Friday with big storm scattered about.”

Until then the Shaver family said they’re crossing their fingers hoping the rain will allow them to finally get their red, white and kaboom event they’ve waited all year.

If you feel like you got cheated out of that fireworks show at the Red, White and Kaboom event, city officials say don’t worry, they plan on hosting a fireworks show on July 4th at Tigertown.

The fireworks spectacular will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. Advanced sale box seats are $7 and reserved seats are $6 and seniors 55 and over and children 14 and under receive a $1.00 discount. Tickets purchased on July 4th will be an additional $1 per ticket. Parking is FREE.
