A man was seriously injured in an underwater spearfishing accident Saturday afternoon.
At approximately 2 p.m. Saturday, Sarasota Police officers responded to the Twin Bridges, which are located east of the Sarasota Yacht Club, on John Ringling Causeway, in reference to a diving accident on the westbound span of the bridges.
When officers arrived, they located 24-year-old Dale Bartush and his friend Jarrod Ditmars, 21.
Police said Bartush's spear gun discharged accidentally. The arrow from the spear gun accidentally hit Ditmars in the head.
Bartush took Ditmars to the surface and began yelling for help, police said. When EMS arrived on scene, Ditmars was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
Police say the investigation shows the incident was an accident and do not expect to file charges. At this time, Ditmars remains in ICU with life threatening injuries.
