A Tampa police officer shot and wounded a carjacking suspect after a brief pursuit Saturday, police said.

Around 11:30 a.m., an officer responded to a report that a carjacker struck a man and stole his car near W Kennedy Boulevard and N Tampiana Avenue.

Officer Brandon Patterson spotted the stolen car and pursued it for one block to Union Street and Delaware Avenue, where a man later identified as George LeGrande, 30, of Tampa got out and confronted the officer, police say.

LeGrande reached behind his back and returned to the vehicle, but then exited the vehicle again and made movements Patterson considered threatening, according to police. The officer then fired, striking LeGrande in the wrist and hip.

LeGrande was taken to an area hospital in stable condition. It is not clear whether he was armed during the confrontation, police say.

LeGrande faces charges of carjacking, fleeing to elude and driving with a suspended license as a habitual offender. He has on inmate release and has an extensive criminal history, including a previous charge of carjacking, police say.

Patterson has been placed on standard administrative leave.
