An Orlando-area state senator has filed legislation that will prohibit the display of the Confederate flag and emblems on state, county, municipal or governmental property.

Sen. Geraldine Thompson, a Democrat who represents Orlando’s District 12, filed the bill for the 2016 legislative session, which begins in January.

“In Walton County and many other locations in Florida, officials still fly the Confederate flag proudly,” she said.

The bill was filed a week after the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce decided not to hold a conference in Walton County next year because the county did not remove a Confederate flag from its courthouse.

Thompson said the bill is an attempt to address this.

“If enacted, this bill will require state, county, and local municipalities to remove the flag off their properties,” she said. “We can’t wait on them to make good faith decisions.”
