Winter Haven Police continue to investigate a two-car crash that left one driver dead and another critically injured Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies said 71-year-old Vilawan McNair was at the stop sign facing north at the intersection of 5th St., SE and Ave. O, SE.

According to witnesses, 19-year-old Mathew Timothy Massam was traveling eastbound on Ave. O, SE towards the intersection.

After stopping at the stop sign, police said McNair entered Ave. O into the path of Massam, causing his 2015 Nissan Altima to impact the driver's side of McNair's 2007 Corvette.

The Altima landed on the hood of the Corvette and both vehicles traveled approximately 100 feet when the Altima landed back on its wheels and slid an additional 100 feet coming to rest at a tree on the south side of the roadway.

The Corvette traveled into the yard at 505 Ave. O, SE coming to rest just before hitting the structure.

McNair was extricated from her vehicle and transported to Winter Haven Hospital where she died. Massam was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Health with critical injuries.

No charges have been filed at this time. Police said it appears speed is a possible factor in the crash. Officials continue to investigate.
