A Pinellas County Sheriff’s Corporal’s vehicle was hit by a wrong-way driver on the Belleair Causeway this morning.

Four people were injured, including the wrong-way driver. The deputy was uninjured.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:55 a.m.

According to the sheriff’s office, Corporal Kannika Nimithkoune was traveling eastbound on the Belleair Causeway when she observed a Chevy Tahoe traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the causeway.

As Corporal Nimithkoune made attempts to avoid a head on collision, investigators say the driver of the Tahoe struck the back driver's side of Corporal Nimithkoune's marked Crown Victoria.

The Tahoe then struck the concrete barrier and traveled northwest where it struck the front driver's side of a Ford van that was traveling eastbound on the causeway. The Ford van then rotated and struck the front of a Dodge truck.

The Chevy Tahoe continued, striking another concrete barrier before coming to a rest in the westbound lane.

The drivers of the Chevy Tahoe, Ford van and both the driver and passenger of the Dodge truck were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Corporal Nimithkoune was not injured in the crash.

Deputies say speed and/or impairment may be factors in the crash.
