A state program designed to teach vocational skills to adults with disabilities has lost its funding, except for in Tarpon Springs.

There, the city commission has voted to pick up the where the state left off by continuing to fund the Gro Group program from the city's park and recreations budget.

The Gro Group teaches plant cultivation, landscaping and nursery operations to about 20 adults with disabilities in Tarpon Springs, and Mayor David Archie says, the funding is well worth it.

"These are individuals who deserve an opportunity to learn skills and to better themselves. And just for the state arbitrarily cut it, we think that was something that we as Tarponites should not all allow to happen."

The program will cost the city about $20,000 a year to operate. Tarpon Springs officials hope that other cities will follow their lead by funding this program in their towns.

Gro Group classes in Tarpon Springs will resume after Labor Day.
