A large building south of 54th Avenue North on 45th Street in Lealman has been many things over the years. It's been a G.T.E Training Facility, a private school and now the Windsor Preparatory School.

More than 800 students are enrolled at the school, and for the very small neighborhood surrounding it, the hundreds of parents in the pick up lines are becoming an issue.

"As far as you can see, from the whole circle there's cars parked everywhere," said resident Bob Albury. "Parked right to the edge of the driveways, in some cases people were actually blocking our driveways."

Over the past three years the school has expanded bringing more traffic. Albury describes one situation in particular where the health of a resident was at risk due to the heavy school traffic.

"We had a case right in the house behind us here that her husband had been sick and he needed to get to the hospital, so they actually had to get a police escort to bring in the ambulance."

Tom Washburn, with Pinellas County Engineering has been in meetings with the school to help make the peak times safer and less congested.  So far, changes include new sidewalks along the school property, a new circulation pattern for parents and staggered release times for students.

Residents suggest adding sidewalks in the neighborhood and to widen 45th Street North to include a third, through lane for peak times.

Washburn and the school principal have a meeting scheduled in the next two weeks to evaluate steps taken up to this point and review any proposed suggestions to alleviate traffic congestion.
