An attempt to fill a boat's gas tank turned into a fuel spill near Belleair Beach.

It happened late Monday afternoon along Belle Isle Avenue.

Authorities said a malfunction caused about 300 gallons to spill onto the street, but about 100 gallons of that got to a nearby storm drain and poured into the Intracoastal Waterway.

That drain empties out right behind Joy Drennan's waterfront home.

"It's a shame," Drennan said. "But I was glad to see all the people here. They're all in my yard, but I don't care. Just let them clean it up."

Cleanup crews have a section of the waterway blocked off as they try to keep the spill from spreading.

Environmental officials are monitoring the clean up.

So far, they believe the impact to the environment is minimal.
